VECTOR v BITMAPS

Thus, a vector file is extremely flexible. It can be resized without loss of quality and its easy to change the elements or colors. When printing, vector files are generally considered to be essential for a crisp, clean printout.

You can usually indetify a vector file in two ways:

• A vector file is usually a line drawing and/or type and has few colors.
• Vector files generally have the file extension .AI (Adobe Illustrator), .EPS or .PDF.

A bitmap consists of dots that are arranged to make an image. The more dots there are, the clearer and sharper the picture. A photograph is an example of a bitmap file.

Sometimes, vector files are turned into bitmap files. Your logo designer may have made the logo in Illustrator but turned the logo into a JPG so you can view it.  That JPG is not a good file for us to work with. Bitmaps generally degrade in quality when resized and unlike a vector file, a bitmap cannot be made larger.

Bitmap files can come in a lot of file types such as BMP, TIF/TIFF, GIF, PNG and more.

Your logo may have been designed as a bitmap logo. In that case, you should send a high-resolution version of your logo.

UNACCEPTABLE FORMATS

• Microsoft Word/PowerPoint – A logo that is inserted into a Word document cannot be extracted without a loss in quality.
• Saving a version of your logo from your website –  Again this will be a low resolution file and we will not be able to work with it.
• A scanned version of your letterhead. Or worse, a faxed version of your letterhead –  A scanner cannot accurately reproduce the colors of your logo. Also, the texture of the paper will be evident in your scan. And finally, the logo will be fuzzy around the edges.
